GMZ Energy, based in Waltham, Mass., has named Dr. Aaron Bent as Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Bent holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from M.I.T.'s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Most recently, he served as North American GM for Polatis Photonics, a subsidiary of Polatis, the telecommunications all-optical switch vendor. Dr. Bent was Co-Founder and President of Continuum, a venture-funded company commercializing products based on solid-state electroceramic materials. He is a Founding Fellow of the New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC) Fellowship Program, a program to accelerate executive leadership in the clean tech market. GMZ Energy develops nanotechnology-based materials, a building block for a new generation of energy-efficient and more environmentally friendly products. GMZ is a venture-backed company founded in 2007 to commercialize thermoelectric materials and devices that leverage radical improvements in material performance. These improvements open the door to numerous solid-state approaches to cooling and power generation. GMZ Energy is supported by investments from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and strategic corporate partners. Founding CEO Mike Clary steps down, but will remain on the company’s Board of Directors.

Previously, Mr. Shaw spent seven years with Cisco Systems where he held several senior marketing positions. Shaw was a member of the leadership team which formulated and executed the company’s voice over IP strategy, representing one of Cisco’s fastest growing product segments. Senior has been a key contributor in many of VBrick’s hardware and software development efforts including the MPEG-1 network video appliances, the second generation MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and WM solutions, and most recently VBrick’s newest platform of H.264 appliances. Prior to VBrick, Senior spent nine years with Scan-Optics, a provider of optical character scanning and recognition systems. Zafgen Inc. as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Zafgen, Jaffe served as chief financial officer in a number of private, venture-backed life science organizations, most recently with Alantos Pharmaceuticals. During his time with Alantos, he successfully led the company through its acquisition by Amgen for more than $300 million in cash. Previously, Jaffe was a principal at Earlybird Venture Capital, based in Munich, Germany, and worked at the Boston Consulting Group, as a member of their pharmaceutical practice group. Jaffe holds a M.S. in molecular biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.B.A. from INSEAD (Fontainebleau, France) and a B.S. in chemistry from Universidad Simon Bolivar (Caracas, Venezuela). Travel Ad Network (TAN) has a hired Dana C. Hayes, Jr., as Chief Revenue Officer, a newly created position. Hayes comes to TAN from Tribune Interactive where he had been leading the interactive sales efforts for the last nine years, developing interactive advertising products for TI’s network of more than 50 websites including LATimes.com and ChicagoTribune.com. He also led the development, creation, launch and held the position of interim CEO for the first 7 months of quadrantONE, a national ad platform for local publishers. Prior to Tribune, Hayes was vice president/Midwest sales for Turner Broadcasting Sales Inc. in Chicago leading a regional sales team for Turner Entertainment Networks and oversaw national commercial-time sales for cable networks TBS and TNT. From 1989 to 1998, he held several managerial roles at Landmark Networks, including regional sales manager, overseeing the Chicago regional sales office for The Weather Channel and The Travel Channel. He began his career as a media buyer and planner at Leo Burnett Company. Hayes has a bachelor’s degree in communications from DePauw University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
